2 min read

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Hon. Bernard Ahiafor has received Her Excellency Liliana Gómez de Weston, Ambassador of Peru to Ghana, and her delegation at Parliament House for a high-level bilateral meeting. Speaking on behalf of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Hon. Ahiafor extended a warm welcome to the envoy, setting the stage for a constructive dialogue aimed at enhancing the diplomatic tie between the two sovereign nations.

Central to their discussions was the strategic imperative to deepen ties between the Parliament of Ghana and the Congress of Peru. Both parties highlighted the proposed establishment of a Parliamentary Friendship League as a vital mechanism for fostering parliamentary diplomacy. This initiative is expected to facilitate regular exchanges of best practices, promote institutional collaboration, and create broader avenues for legislative engagement between lawmakers from both countries.

Beyond legislative relations, the delegation explored key socio-economic issues and areas of mutual strategic interest. Discussions touched on critical sectors including expanding bilateral trade, advancing cocoa manufacturing through local value addition, strengthening drug control frameworks, and jointly tackling the environmental and economic threats posed by illegal mining.

Reaffirming the commitment of Ghana's legislature, Hon. Ahiafor assured the Peruvian delegation of Parliament’s readiness to maintain open, constructive engagement with the Embassy. He emphasized Parliament’s dedication to supporting sustainable initiatives and legal frameworks that advance economic growth and preserve the longstanding friendship and partnership between Ghana and Peru.
