Firefighters Prevents Potential Explosion as Tanker Catches Fire at Beposo

1 min read

Quick action by both driver and local firefighters prevented a major incident on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, when a bitumen-laden tanker caught fire at Beposo Market, near the Benab Oil Filling Station along the Komenda-Takoradi highway.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was alerted to the situation at 1:27 PM and dispatched a emergency response team, arriving at the scene by 1:50 PM.

Upon arrival, crew members discovered that while the active flames had already been put out, thick smoke was still coming from the vehicle. Firefighters immediately initiated cooling operations, applying a mix of water and foam compound across the Volvo tanker (registration CR 8105-24) to reduce high internal temperatures and prevent the bitumen from re-igniting.

The tanker's driver, Mr. Ebenezer Lawer, explained that he was en route from Takoradi to Accra when he noticed smoke pouring from the dashboard. He instantly dialed the GNFS emergency line while using his onboard fire extinguisher to manage the flames. His swift, proactive response was critical in stopping the fire from spreading to the main tank and saving the valuable cargo.
