Data Protection Agency Delegation Pays Courtesy Call on Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament

A high-level delegation from the Data Protection Agency (DPA), led by Executive Director Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin

The visit served multiple important purposes: to express gratitude to the Speaker for his representation at the Agency’s recently concluded Privacy Week celebrations, to brief him on the key outcomes of the Annual International Conference on Data Protection and Privacy, and to formally present an official Citation of Appreciation. The citation recognizes the Speaker’s consistent legislative and institutional support for the DPA’s mandate.

Dr. Kavaarpuo described the Speaker’s backing as “indispensable” to the Agency’s progress in safeguarding citizens’ digital rights and advancing data protection in the country.

In response, the Rt. Hon. Speaker expressed profound appreciation for the visit and the honour bestowed upon him. He underscored that privacy is a fundamental human right, not a luxury, and reaffirmed Parliament’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Ghana’s data protection framework.

The Speaker pledged to:

Review existing laws to close identified loopholes

Intensify public awareness campaigns, especially in rural communities

Enforce stricter sanctions against data privacy violators

“The Data Protection Agency is the shield of the digital age,” the Speaker declared, “and as Parliament, we are the arm that holds that shield high. We shall not drop it.”

The productive meeting ended on a high note, with both parties renewing their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at building a secure, trusted, and prosperous digital future for all citizens.
