Chevening Alumni to Host High-Level Forum in Accra on Illegal Mining, Flooding, and Environmental Accountability

​The Chevening Alumni Association Ghana is set to host an impactful panel discussion under the Alumni Voices Chevening Speaker Series. Scheduled for Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 09:00 GMT at the British Council in Accra, the event brings together prominent leaders and experts to tackle one of the region's most pressing ecological crises. Centered on the compelling theme, "Our Rivers, Our Future: Illegal Mining, Flooding and the Urgent Case for Environmental Accountability," the session aims to spotlight the cascading effects of environmental degradation and spark actionable solutions for policy change and civic responsibility. 

​The event boasts a distinguished panel of leaders with extensive backgrounds in environmental activism, sustainable design, and corporate strategy. Facilitated by Ebenezer Amankwah, Corporate Communications Strategy lead at Tullow Ghana and Chevening Scholar (2009/10), the dialogue features key perspectives from Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana. Joining him are environmentalist Gloria Agyare (Chevening Alumni, 2024/25) and architect Afua Ampomah-Amoako (Chevening Alumni, 2024/25), creating a dynamic platform for interdisciplinary inquiry into river health and urban resilience. 

​Central to the discussion is the critical alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The session directly engages SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). By framing illegal mining (galamsey) and frequent flooding through the lens of international sustainability metrics, the forum emphasizes the immediate structural and regulatory reforms necessary to secure water systems and safeguard vulnerable communities. 

​This high-level dialogue is funded by the Chevening Alumni Programme Fund (CAPF) and supported by key partners including the British Council, the British High Commission Accra, A Rocha Ghana, and the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI). Media coverage and outreach are reinforced through partnerships with JoyNews and the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). Together, these institutions emphasize a shared commitment to amplifying community voices and promoting evidence-based governance across Ghana's natural resource sector. 

​As water bodies face unprecedented risks from illegal mining activities and severe flooding patterns, this speaker series serves as a urgent call to action for civil society, policymakers, and industry stakeholders.
