Bawumia Condemns La Pleasure Beach Demolition: Pledges to Develop Area When given Power

3 min read

The former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has strongly condemned the sudden demolition at La Pleasure Beach, expressing deep concern over the severe destruction of property and local livelihoods. Speaking from Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr. Bawumia lamented the heavy-handed execution of the exercise, which took place a day prior and leveled several structures along the coastline, including popular spots like the La Pleasure Beach and the Polo Beach Club. He highlighted the tragedy of business operators losing valuable assets that could easily have been salvaged had they been given proper notice.

Describing the coastal strip as a vital source of income for thousands of citizens particularly the youth Dr. Bawumia questioned the harsh manner in which the state authority carried out the operation. He emphasized the beach’s social, cultural, and economic significance, reminding the public of its critical role in boosting national tourism during the Year of Return initiative under the NPP administration. According to him, demolishing such an iconic enclave in a "bizarre and wanton" fashion delivers a devastating blow to hardworking entrepreneurs and the local tourism sector.

Beyond criticizing the demolition, Dr. Bawumia pledged to fully support the restoration of impacted businesses and transform the area into a modern, world-class economic and tourist hub if entrusted with power. His proposed strategy includes systematically rebuilding the local beach economy, modernizing the coastline to international standards, and issuing formal land leases directly to individual business owners. This, he noted, would provide long-term land security and empower operators to manage and grow their enterprises safely without the constant fear of arbitrary eviction.

Addressing the broader ecosystem of the enclave, the former Vice President underscored the necessity of peaceful coexistence among all stakeholders. He outlined plans to establish structured arrangements that allow premier establishments like the Labadi Beach Hotel to thrive alongside smaller informal businesses, which he described as the true lifeblood of the beach economy. Additionally, Dr. Bawumia promised to engage directly with the management of neighboring Laboma Beach to resolve ongoing legal and operational challenges, ensuring full compliance with national regulatory frameworks.

Finally, Dr. Bawumia assured stakeholders that any redevelopment blueprint would directly incorporate critical environmental interventions, including comprehensive restoration work on the surrounding lagoon to permanently address regional flooding and sanitation issues. Reaffirming his commitment to protecting thousands of livelihoods tied to Ghana's coastal hospitality sector, he reiterated that true development must protect local investments rather than destroy them, promising a sustainable, inclusive future for the La beach enclave.
