Bank of Ghana to Launch New "Heritage Series" Banknotes in November 2026

​The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has announced plans to officially introduce a new collection of banknotes, dubbed the "Heritage Series," on November 3, 2026, at the Bank Square in Accra. Speaking at a Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing, Bank of Ghana Governor Dr. Johnson Asiama revealed that the upcoming series is designed to modernize the nation's physical currency while aligning with global technological advancements. Centered on the theme "The Cedi: Our Future, Secure, Designed to Last," the new banknotes aim to strengthen security, boost durability, and improve overall currency management efficiency across the country.

​The Heritage Series will integrate advanced anti-counterfeiting features alongside updated visual designs that showcase Ghana’s rich history, cultural identity, and future aspirations. Each denomination in the new lineup will feature Ghanaian iconographic elements and pay tribute to national heroes, weaving historical storytelling directly into the nation's daily financial transactions. According to Dr. Asiama, the redesign reflects both Ghana's proud heritage and its modern vision, ensuring the physical cedi remains a resilient symbol of national pride while standing up to modern security threats.

​To ensure a seamless transition and prevent unnecessary panic, the Bank of Ghana clarified that the launch of the Heritage Series will not invalidate any existing legal tender. The new banknotes are intended to circulate alongside the current cedi notes, allowing the public to continue using their existing cash without interruption. The central bank explicitly advised citizens and business owners against rushing to commercial banks to exchange or withdraw their current notes solely due to the arrival of the new series.

​Alongside the product announcement, the central bank issued an earnest appeal to financial institutions, traders, and the general public to practice better cash-handling habits. The BoG emphasized that improper practices such as crumpling, stapling, writing on bills, or using cash for decorative displays significantly shorten the lifespan of the paper notes. By treating the upcoming Heritage Series and existing banknotes with care, citizens can help preserve currency quality, lower government reprinting costs, and support a more cost-effective national financial system.
