Ayariga Commit to Raising Funds for National Cathedral Project If Approved

Mahama Ayariga, the Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has promised to explore alternative funding sources for the National Cathedral project if his nomination is confirmed by Parliament, provided the initiative gets the backing of President John Dramani Mahama and the Christian leadership.

​Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, 2026, Mr. Ayariga noted that while he had strong reservations about how the project was previously handled, he supports the core vision of building a national cathedral for the country's Christian population.

​“I don’t think there is anything wrong with the idea; rather, it was a good initiative that suffered from poor execution,” he explained, adding that he also had concerns regarding the chosen site.

​He further assured the committee: “If approved, I will consult with leaders of the Christian community. If they still wish to proceed, I will seek the President's approval and work to secure the necessary funds for its construction.”

​Highlighting Ghana’s strong religious foundation, Mr. Ayariga pointed to the prominence of churches, mosques, and other places of worship across the nation, maintaining that the fundamental concept of a National Cathedral remains sound.
