A daylight armed robbery at Walewale in the North East Region has left local residents worried about security for mobile money vendors and small businesses operating in the municipality.
The attack occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at around 2:00 PM when an unidentified man believed to be a Fulbe approached the mobile money agent to make a cash transfer. According to eyewitnesses, as the vendor began processing the transaction after receiving the cash, a group of armed men suddenly stormed the spot.
To disperse onlookers, the assailants fired multiple gunshots into the air, triggering panic and sending bystanders running for cover. Taking advantage of the chaos, the gang snatched the vendor's money bag containing an undisclosed amount of cash.
Before fleeing, the robbers also made off with the customer's motorbike. Residents noted that the victim had purchased the motorcycle just a day prior to the incident.
Police in the region are expected to investigate the matter, while local business owners continue to demand increased police patrols in the area.
