Accra Airport Expansion : President Mahama Cut Sod For Seven-Storey Car Park and Commercial Complex

1 min read

A major project to upgrade Kotoka International Airport is underway following the official ground-breaking for a modern seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3.

The new development will introduce roughly 2,030 sheltered parking slots while incorporating dedicated retail, dining, and leisure zones to streamline the traveler experience.

Speaking at the launch, President John Dramani Mahama highlighted that the expansion aligns with a broader national strategy to transform Ghana into a leading aviation hub, seamless transit location, and top destination in Africa.

The investment addresses a sharp rise in air travel demand, with annual passenger numbers climbing from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million by 2025. Alongside physical expansion, the President called for high standards of service, courtesy, and operational discipline across the country's aviation industry.

The multi-purpose complex forms part of a larger suite of ongoing infrastructure upgrades, which includes a new Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) control tower, extensive refurbishment of Terminal 2, and an upgraded transfer concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3. All projects are fully self-financed through the internal funds of the GCAA and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), requiring no direct state expenditure.
