WASSCE 2021: Agona SHTS tutor arrested for dictating answers to candidates

A female teacher at the Agona Senior High Technical School (ASTEC) in the Ashanti Region has been picked up by the police, an official statement said.

Mabel Fosua is being investigated by the Sekyere South District Police Command after she was caught reading out answers of Monday’s General Agriculture paper to candidates.

The incident was said to have happened in one of the examination halls at about 9:20 a.m., during a routine visit to the ASHTEC examination center by an official of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).

A sheet of paper containing pieces of information written in red ink has since been retrieved from the suspect, a police statement read.

According to the WAEC officer the information had already gone viral and needed immediate action.

Sekyere South District Police Commander ASP Owusu Poku who confirmed the incident to Accra-based Asaase Radio said the suspect has been cautioned and released on a service enquiry bail.

“We are still investigating the case because she [the suspect] has not admitted to the offence but statements have been taken from her. The examiner is yet to submit his statement to the investigator”, ASP Owusu Poku said.

Mabel could face jail if found culpable. DailyMailGh.com understands an official report has been sent to the WAEC for further action.

Issues of examination malpractice have been topical in Ghana after Africa Education Watch, an education think tank uncovered a cartel that distribute question and answers on social media.

National security operatives arrested a leader of the cartel at Kasoa in the Central Region. Two teachers who were also arrested in the Oti Region are also serving a three-month jail term for committing a similar offence.

Already the WAEC says at least 11 schools are under surveillance following widespread exam malpractice in the ongoing WASSCE.
