The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is set to pay a significant tribute to its late founder, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, by officially renaming its national headquarters in his honour. The move forms part of elaborate commemorations marking what would have been the former president's 79th birthday on June 22, 2026. Party officials, in collaboration with the JJ Rawlings Foundation, have announced that the headquarters will henceforth be known as "Jerry Rawlings House" or "Rawlings House," symbolising the enduring legacy of the man who transformed Ghana's political landscape.

Rawlings, who passed away in November 2020, remains a towering figure in Ghanaian history. As a military officer turned revolutionary and democratically elected president, he played a pivotal role in the transition to the Fourth Republic, championing probity, accountability, and the empowerment of ordinary citizens. The NDC, which he founded, views the renaming as a fitting gesture to preserve his memory and inspire current and future generations of party members. An unveiling of a bust in his likeness is also scheduled for the same day at the headquarters.

The birthday commemorations will feature a dual-event programme, including a morning ceremony at the headquarters for the renaming and bust unveiling, followed by an evening lecture and exhibition at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences. The theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” underscores the party's commitment to reflecting on Rawlings' contributions to democracy and national development. Additionally, the NDC has declared June as "NDC Month" to intensify grassroots activities and mobilise support.

This initiative has sparked widespread discussions across Ghana's political spectrum. Supporters hail it as a long-overdue recognition of Rawlings' foundational role, while some analysts urge the party to ensure the gesture transcends symbolism by recommitting to his core values of integrity and social justice. The renaming aligns with similar honours, such as proposals to name institutions after him, highlighting his broad national impact beyond partisan lines.

As Ghana gears up for these events, the NDC's actions are expected to galvanise its base and reignite conversations about leadership and legacy in the country's politics. The commemoration not only celebrates a departed icon but also positions Rawlings' ideals at the heart of the party's future direction ahead of key electoral cycles. Party faithful and citizens alike anticipate a memorable celebration that honours one of Ghana's most influential statesmen.
