Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu has called for stronger partnerships between school leadership, educators, parents, and local communities to foster discipline and ethical conduct among students across the region.
Addressing attendees at the opening of the 64th Annual Conference of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) at Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, Hon. Gunu appealed to school administrators to directly tackle pressing student conduct issues, including bullying, exam malpractice, drug abuse, and the misuse of social media.
The Regional Minister emphasized that maintaining a disciplined learning environment requires proper educational infrastructure, motivated staff, effective administration, and active parental engagement. He also pointed to ongoing school infrastructure developments and social interventions being implemented under President John Dramani Mahama’s "Resetting Agenda."
Reaffirming the Volta Regional Coordinating Council's commitment, Hon. Gunu pledged continued collaboration with educational authorities and development partners to elevate learning outcomes across the Volta Region.
Speaking at the same event, Education Minister Hon. Haruna Iddrisu shared significant updates regarding teacher compensation. He announced that the initial payout for outstanding promotion arrears owed to 52,000 teachers is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026, with all remaining balances set to be settled alongside their regular October salary payments.
Hon. Iddrisu detailed ongoing structural reforms within the Ghana Education Service (GES) aimed at improving career progression structures and retirement benefits for teaching professionals.
Additionally, the Education Minister revealed that over 300 Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects are currently underway nationwide. He reiterated the government's dual focus on finishing legacy infrastructure projects while initiating new developments to tackle space and facility deficits in schools.
Aligning with the event’s theme “Student Discipline in a Challenging World: Context, Challenges, and a Constructive Way Forward” Hon. Iddrisu encouraged stakeholders to view discipline through a wider lens, noting that accountability and proper conduct must extend to school management, financial administration, and community leaders.
The annual CHASS conference continues to assemble key actors across the education sector to develop practical approaches for raising educational standards and restoring discipline in schools nationwide.
