GES Warns School Heads Against Rejecting Students Over Metal Trunks and Chop Boxes

​The Ghana Education Service (GES) has cautioned heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools (SHS/SHTS) against turning away or denying accommodation to newly admitted students based on the type of personal storage containers they bring. This warning comes in response to reports that several schools have been refusing entry to students carrying traditional metal trunks or wooden chop boxes, instead insisting on specific, often costly, alternatives prescribed by individual school administrations.

​In an official statement signed by the Deputy Director-General of GES, Professor Mrs. Smile Dzisi, the Service emphasized that forcing parents to buy specific brands or types of storage imposes an unnecessary financial burden on families. GES reiterated that all duly admitted boarding students must be accommodated fairly and without discrimination based on their economic background. School heads were reminded that as long as a student's trunk or chop box is reasonably sized, safe, and poses no health or safety hazard to others, it must be accepted.

​To ensure compliance across the country, Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to communicate this directive immediately to all school administrators. The GES warned that investigations will be launched into any reports of non-compliance, and any school head found flouting the order will face strict disciplinary action in accordance with the regulations and standards of the Service.
