Deep Crisis in Volta Region High Schools: Five Institutions Record Zero Percent Pass Rate in 2026 WASSCE Core Subjects

​A recent performance analysis of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has revealed a severe decline in the quality of secondary education across the Volta Region. Official statistics show that five public Senior High Schools in the region recorded a zero percent pass rate across the four foundational core subjects.

​The statistics were disclosed by the Volta Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service during a capacity-building workshop organized for school administrators and heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools. According to the data, not a single candidate from the five affected institutions managed to secure a qualifying grade between A1 and C6 in English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies.

​The affected institutions include Akome Senior High Technical School, which presented 206 candidates; Tanyigbe Senior High School, with 179 candidates; Ave Senior High School, with 150 candidates; Kpeve Senior High Technical School, with 117 candidates; and Volta Senior High School, with 35 candidates. In total, all 687 students presented by these five schools failed to meet the baseline requirements for tertiary education admission.

​Taking the broader region into account, the report examined results from 68 public secondary institutions involving a total of 26,544 candidates. Out of this total, only 4,067 students earned passing grades in all four core subjects, bringing the overall regional qualification rate to a low 15.32 percent.

​A gender breakdown of the regional performance reveals that out of 12,145 male students who sat for the examinations, 1,964 qualified for higher education, representing a pass rate of 16.17 percent. Meanwhile, out of 14,399 female candidates, 2,103 met the qualification criteria, translating to a pass rate of 14.61 percent.

​An analysis of individual subjects highlights Core Mathematics as the primary area of academic difficulty for students. Only 6,618 out of 26,484 candidates achieved a passing grade in Core Mathematics, resulting in the lowest pass rate among the core subjects at 24.99 percent.

​Performance in the remaining science and social subjects also remained concerning. Integrated Science recorded a pass rate of 35.93 percent, with 9,512 out of 26,475 candidates passing. Social Studies saw a slightly higher success rate of 38.23 percent, representing 10,140 successful candidates out of 26,527. English Language emerged as the strongest subject in the region, with 16,053 out of 26,536 candidates securing a pass, representing a 60.50 percent success rate.
